| Borough Fire Wood Give Away |
|
| In conjunction with the Paramus D.P.W. Department and the Environmental Commission, the September 24 borough fire wood give away was a success. D.P.W. supplied six thirty-yard containers of wood and in less than two hours over 95 residents came for fire wood. |

| "Bat Houses" |
|
| Bats may be frightening to some, but they are harmless and have a huge appetite for mosquitoes. A single bat can consume almost a half a pound of bugs in a season. One way to encourage these little mammals to inhabit our yards is by putting up a bat nesting box. |

| National Night Out |
|
| The Environmental Commission was asked to participate in Paramus National Night Out on August 2, 2011. Commissioners Jerry Anthony, Jorge Quintana, Ed Onorato, Joe Lagana and secretary Jean Payoczkowski attended. Scott Gunther of Wild Birds Unlimited joined us in displaying bat houses, literature and information on Commission projects. |

| Upcoming Event: ANJEC (Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions) |

| On Monday, September 12, 2011 at 7:00 pm., the Paramus Environmental Commission will sponsor a presentation by ANJEC (Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions). Their presentation will include "Environmental Commission Powers and Responsibilities" and "Selling Energy Conservation in Your Town." |

| Smoking Prohibited In Paramus Parks, Playgrounds And Recreational Facilities |
|
| The Paramus Board of Health has adopted an ordinance prohibiting smoking in Borough parks, playgrounds, public swimming facilities and recreational areas, according to Borough Health Officer John Hopper. The Health Officer advised that the passage of this ordinance will reduce exposure to environmental tobacco smoke and will prevent children from observing and emulating adult behavior which is hazardous to health. |

| On June 9, 2011, the Environmental Commission presented four (4) scholarships to Paramus High School Environmental Science students. We wish them much success in their futures. |

| Whole Foods Earth Day Eco-Bash Event |
|
| On Earth Day, April 22, 2011, Whole Foods Market of Paramus, Bergen Town Center held an "Eco-Bash Event". The Paramus Environmental Commission was asked to participate with other vendors. Jorge Quintana and Ed Onorato attended for the Commission. The event was a huge success. Special thanks to Danielle Sandars from Whole Foods for the invitation. |

| New Electronic Recycling Law |
|
| New Jersey's new Electronic Waste Management Act went into effect on January 1 requiring TVs, computers and monitors and other items known as e-waste to be recycled. The new law means residents can no longer put these devices out on the curb for pickup with regular solid waste. |

| Environmental Commission member Jerry Anthony was honored at the Project Porchlight Awards Dinner on Sept. 29, 2010. Only two towns in Bergen County, Mahwah and Paramus, received recognition. |
